Using the EtherTalk interface card named NetCard with
EPSON Stylus¬1500
Attention!
Please run the self test for your NetCard using the NetCard's Status push button. If your NetCard is equipped with firmware version 6.5.0t or higher, you only need to read the section about changing the name; however, if your NetCard is equipped with a firmware version older than 6.5.0t, please read all of the information contained in this file. To obtain a firmware update for your NetCard you can contact one of the phone numbers listed at the end of this file.
In order to update the NetCard firmware version you need - only for this procedure - a DOS workstation with a network card connected to the Apple Talk network and IPX/ODI drivers loaded.
Information
Automatic recognition of the EPSON Stylus¬ 1500
The Apple printer driver is constructed in such a way that it sends a query to the printer requesting its name and then configures itself accordingly. This means that there is only one printer driver for several printers. If the printer driver AT-StylusCOLOR receives no response to its query from the menu Chooser, it assumes that the printer in question is an EPSON Stylus COLOR.
If, after the installation of the printer driver and the successful recognition of a NetCard / NetBox, the EPSON Stylus 1500 is not recognized, you should copy the EpsonKey file, which can be identified as the key icon, from the driver diskette to the Extensions folder which can be found in the System folder and change the file name e.g. to Stylus Pro XL+.The next time a query is sent, the printer driver assumes that an EPSON Stylus Pro XL printer is connected. If you rename the file to Stylus Pro, the printer driver assumes that you are using an EPSON Stylus Pro printer and if you rename the file to Stylus 1500, the printer driver assumes that you are using an EPSON Stylus 1500.
Printer type setting
If, after installing the printer driver on the Macintosh, neither printer nor NetCard / NetBox can be found in the menu Chooser in the AppleTalk zone, it is possible that the NetCard/NetBox may have been configured with an incorrect printer type setting. Originally, the default factory setting for NetLine devices was LaserWriter. In the case of the EPSON Stylus series printers, however, the correct setting is EPSONLQ2.
Changing the Name
Before you can change the name, a network connection to the NetCard/NetBox must be established by means of the IPX protocol. A DOS computer with a network card to enable a direct connection to the NetCard/NetBox via a BNC cable, two BNC-T adapters and terminal resistors is sufficient for this purpose. After that, you can change the name on the DOS computer using the installation program NETSETUP (supplied with NetLine) by calling up the menu option Apple in the menu Config. and altering the Printer Type from LaserWriter to EPSONLQ2.
The new transparent NetCard version currently being developed enables queries to be answered directly by the printer. In this way, the printer driver receives firm information regarding the type of printer being used. On completion, this version can be obtained via the EPSON BBS (Tel. +49 / (0)211 / 5621411).
